A court has ordered the suspension of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) congresses scheduled to commence today in Adamawa State, following a suit filed by factional state chairman, Shehu Yohanna.
The ruling comes against the backdrop of a deepening internal crisis within the party, which has been fractured into three major factions. One bloc is loyal to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, reportedly backing former Governor Jibrilla Bindow for the governorship. Another faction aligns with Aisha Binani, while a third is led by Yohanna, who previously served as the party’s state chairman before the ADC’s adoption as a coalition platform.
Meanwhile, Senator Ishaku Abbo, initially aligned with Babachir Lawal’s camp, has also distanced himself from the planned congresses, citing the party’s alleged refusal to engage in negotiations with Aisha Binani over the control of party structures.
In a related development, Binani, who is eyeing the governorship under the ADC platform, has equally boycotted the congresses being organised by the Lawal-led faction.
The latest developments underscore the lingering divisions within the party, raising concerns over its cohesion ahead of future political contests.
