The National Assembly on Tuesday marked a historic milestone with the formal commissioning of its first Christian Chapel, an event presided over by the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, CON.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu underscored the moral responsibility of lawmakers, noting that legislators entrusted with making laws for over 200 million Nigerians must remain conscious of their duty to serve under the authority and guidance of God, which gives direction and meaning to human institutions.
Rep. Kalu acknowledged the foresight of previous Assemblies and praised the resilience of the Christian Legislators Fellowship across the 7th, 8th, and 9th Assemblies, whose sustained efforts and sacrifices culminated in the completion of the Chapel.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, GCFR, for honouring the occasion with his presence.
Commending the leadership of the 10th Assembly, Rep. Kalu lauded the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, GCON, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, GCON, for their commitment to bringing a long-held vision to fruition. He noted that history would record that the current legislature fulfilled a vision conceived years earlier.
Describing the Chapel as a legacy for both the present and future, Rep. Kalu said it is expected to serve as a place of prayer for national unity, peace across all states of the federation, and moral strength for leaders faced with difficult decisions.
The commissioning ceremony was held at the National Assembly of Nigeria and attended by lawmakers, dignitaries, and invited guests.
