A growing political momentum is placing Iyabo Obasanjo at the centre of what observers describe as a potentially historic shift in Ogun State, as stakeholders across the Gateway State rally around the possibility of electing its first female governor in 2027.
The emerging wave of support, highlighted in a widely circulated opinion by public affairs commentator Adewale Ademide, reflects what analysts see as a strategic convergence of grassroots mobilisation, elite backing, and increasing advocacy for gender inclusion in governance.
Ademide situates the development within Ogun State’s long-standing tradition of progressive leadership across its major blocs—Egba, Ijebu, Yewa, and Awori—arguing that the state may once again be on the cusp of a defining political moment.
According to him, the growing support for Obasanjo transcends individual ambition, representing a broader movement driven by inclusivity, reform-oriented governance, and evolving democratic values. He noted that the steady expansion of her support base across different regions underscores a readiness among the electorate to embrace a new political narrative.
The development also aligns with the broader national discourse on women’s political participation, championed by figures such as Oluremi Tinubu, who has consistently advocated for increased female representation in leadership positions.
