The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken a major step toward improving members’ welfare and professional efficiency with the commissioning of a free Wi-Fi facility at its secretariat.
The facility was donated and inaugurated on Monday by philanthropist and community leader, Chief Olalekan Gbenga Oso, as part of efforts to enhance internet access and support modern journalism practices in the state and was donation to marks Chief Oso’s 50th birthday celebration, scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Speaking during the event, Chief Oso explained that the initiative aims to strengthen journalism by enabling reporters to access online resources, conduct research, and engage effectively with digital platforms. He emphasized that empowering journalists is vital to societal development and democratic growth, while also pledging continued support for the union.
Chief Oso, who holds the traditional titles of Asiwaju of Owu Akinale and Asiwaju Bobaselu of Awori Ota, described the project as a modest contribution to advancing journalism. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the profession and fostering a lasting partnership with the NUJ.
In his remarks, the Ogun NUJ Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, praised Chief Oso as a reliable supporter of the media. He described the donation as both timely and historic, noting that Abeokuta holds a significant place in Nigeria’s media history as the birthplace of the country’s first newspaper.
Olanrewaju also revealed that this is the first time the council will provide free internet access to its members at the secretariat. He expressed appreciation to the donor and optimism that the gesture would further strengthen ties between Chief Oso and the NUJ.
